Herbal Medicines For Sciatica

Pain radiating through the buttock, down the back of the thigh and lower leg, and along the length of the sciatic nerve is the result of irritation to the nerve roots at the origin of the sciatic nerve.

This is commonly caused by a prolapsed intervertebral disk (slipped disk) pressing on the spinal root of a nerve or, more unusually, pressure from a clot, tumour, or even sitting awkwardly. It can be aggravated by coughing, sneezing, or bending. It is often preceded or accompanied by lumbago, and sometimes by pins and needles and numbness.

Treatment

Bedrest on a firm mattress is advisable.

Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for:

Hydrotherapy Alternating an ice or hot pack on the hase of the spine helps to relieve pain.

Acupressure This can be extremely beneficial. Deep thumb pressure will be used.

Acupuncture

The acupuncture technique known as moxibustion (localized heat) may be used to relieve pain.

Osteopathy, Chiropractic, Massage, and Hydrotherapy

The pressure applied through any of these manipulative therapies may be useful for reducing the pain of spasm.

Tics, Twitching, Pins and Needles

Uncontrolled repetitive contractions of a muscle cause tics and twitching, such as shrugging the shoulders, screwing up the eyes, or a 'nervous' cough. These often develop in children and may be a sign of psychological disturbance or a response to situations in which the child feels tension

Pins and needles causes a prickly or tingling sensation and numbness, and is the result of a disturbance of the impulses through the nerves that carry sensation from the skin to the brain. This disturbance may be due to damage, irritation, or pressure on the nerves, and can be caused by something as simple as sleeping on an arm in an awkward way, or sitting or lying in one position for too long.

Treatment

Although tics are often best left ignored, behavioral therapy can help discover the cause. Minor twitches and pins and needles, although irritating, need no attention.

Consult a qualified practitioner/therapist for:

Talking Treatment

Psychotherapy can help overcome tics caused by anxiety.
