Some Intellectual Disabilities and Their Symptoms

Intellectual disability is the term used when a person has difficulty learning new things, doing daily activities and communicating with others. It is a broad term that covers all intellectual deficits. Intellectual disability can be acquired through severe head injury, dementia or prenatal causes. These disabilities may be evident in any age, any gender and race.

To fully understand the concept of intellectual disability, one must be familiar with its types. Each type of disability needs proper and specific understanding, treatment and care.

ADHD

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a psychiatric and intellectual disorder that is characterized by overactivity, impulsiveness, or inattentiveness of a person. A person before being considered diagnosed with this disorder should be out of the normal range of a child's age and development when they are still curious and naturally impulsive.

Symptoms of ADHD can be seen to children before seven years old. There are three types of ADHD: being inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and the combination of the two. ADHD is usually seen in school-aged children around the globe. About 3 to 5 percent of these children are diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD may be inheritable but the cause of this disorder is still unknown. ADHD often comes with another psychiatric disorder such as depression.

The symptoms of ADHD vary on the type of disorder. Inattentive type of ADHD is characterized by a child having forgetful traits like always losing pencils, books, toys and other items and even may even forget daily tasks and activities. They also have difficulty in following small instructions and has poor organization skills.

Hyperactivity, on the other hand, is characterized by a noisy child that cannot stay in one place for a long time. These children have difficulty playing quietly and often run around or jump in appropriate situations. An impulsive child answers questions before it has been completed. They also have difficulties in waiting.

A child must have at least 6 of the symptoms in a span of 6 months before he is considered with this disorder. It should also be present in the child before 7 years of age. You can treat child with ADHD through guidance therapy or medication.

Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or commonly known as Autism is a developmental intellectual disability that characterized by impaired communication and interaction. Symptoms of Autism are apparent to children as early as three years old. Symptoms of autism include problems in nonverbal communication such as eye contact and body posture.

Most people suffering from autism are always alone and find it hard to establish acquaintances and friendships. It is also exhibited with the lack of social interests like talking with people, going out with people and other enjoyment with others.

Sotos Syndrome

If ADHD and Autism are common intellectual disorder, Cerebral Gigantism or Sotos syndrome is a rare intellectual disorder that is characterized by excessive physical growth during 2 to 3 years. Sotos syndrome is usually accompanied by mild mental retardation and slow social development. There is no known standard cure that will fully eliminate Sotos syndrome. However, symptoms can be treated and prevented.
