What do you want to be when your older?

I think this is a question which most of us get asked when we are at. I knew exactly what I wanted to be when I was young. Either a Nurse or even better, a Paramedic. I really wanted to care for people and make them feel better when they were ill. I never considered how poorly paid these positions were as money does not really matter when you are only seven.

When I was fifteen the school sent us on experience and I was given a placement at a retirement home for the elderly. I think most people presume that 'old people's homes' are depressing, dirty and have the stench of death in the air. I felt differently. The variety of characters I met made it such a diverse and interesting place to work. There was John the comedian, Helen the story teller, the continuously cantankerous Christopher and a couple who had just found a new romance canoodling in the corner. I absolutely loved it.

However, when I left school I decided to do something for me, which meant I wanted to earn plenty of money and I just didn't think it was possible working in the public sector. I went to work as a Sales Executive. I loved the promises of big bonuses and expensive cars. Sure enough the rewards were bountiful in monetary terms but I felt there was something missing and decided to make some changes.

After finally qualifying as a social worker I now work with senior citizens within my local area. We assist them with almost any aspect of life they need help with. It can be money, health or simply organising transport for hospital appointments. Each day is different and presents a new situation. For example today we helped a woman with financial worries realise that she was entitled to more benefit than she was receiving and we informed an elderly man that he could use his War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement Renault Motability to make purchasing a new car at Renault much more affordable.
