Things to Be Taken Care Of Before Investing In Motability Cars

If you are receiving the Higher Rate Component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), you may have heard the Motability scheme mentioned. You are no doubt aware that it allows you to take advantage of a new vehicle, but to what extent? Do you have to pay for the car? Is the car bought for you? What about fuel and servicing? We've put together a few answers to the most common questions about Motability cars, which should help you to understand what you are being offered.

Do you own the Motability vehicle you have been given? No, you don't - and you haven't been given it either. Your Motability vehicle comes to you on lease hire, usually. The monthly payments for the lease are made with the Higher Rate Component of the Disability Living Allowance.

Can you buy your Motability vehicle outright? Yes you can - though the difference, between buying it and leasing it on hire, is for practical purposes minimal. Whether you choose to lease your Motability cars or buy them, the outcome is roughly the same: your DLA pays monthly payments so you get to keep the car.

Do you ever have to pay a portion of the cost of your Motability vehicle? Only if you choose a model that falls outside the normal monthly payment range. Executive saloons and sports models sometimes incur an initial down payment, for example - with the amount paid going up according to the list price of the car. The payment is usually a couple of hundred pounds: after that, your DLA takes care of monthly payments as per usual.

Are Motability cars set up for mobility challenged drivers? Yes. Your Motability vehicle can be modified for you to drive, in accordance with the precise nature of your mobility challenges. You will also find that some dealers (like the Dickens Group of Wrexham) offer you targeted free extras, like parking sensors, on Motability models.

Do you have to pay the insurance on your Motability vehicle? No. The Motability scheme is designed to make life easier for all mobility challenged drivers. Your DLA supplement pays for the insurance and road tax of your vehicle.

What about other drivers? No problem. Motability cars can be insured for up to three people in total: you, and two other named drivers. The named drivers do not have to pay anything: their insurance cover is paid for by your Motability scheme payments, which come out of your DLA.

Again, you don't have to pay for servicing and repairs. The only thing you ever have to pay for with a Motability vehicle is oil and fuel.

Motability vehicles can be traded in against newer models in the same way that any lease hire vehicle can be returned in favour of a new one. After a pre defined number of years you will be eligible for a new one.

Motability cars have been designed with you in mind. As such, you have very little to worry about. Simply go to your Motability accredited dealer and tell them you wish to participate in the scheme. They will do the rest.
