Childrens Wheelchairs - The Important Features Needed For A Paediatric Wheelchair

Children need to be involved with activities they enjoy, including children who are bound to a wheelchair. Getting a paediatric wheelchair allows children to have some independence and be involved with activities they enjoy. When looking for a wheelchair there are many considerations and options available, each with different accessories or features.

Children wheelchairs can be either electric or manual. Choosing, which to get will depend on the child and their mobility. If they do not have arm control, a manual will be the chair of choice as it will need to be pushed. For children able to control the chair, an electric one is more expensive; however, the child will have much better control of their chair.

Rather it be electric or manual, a wheelchair should be designed from high quality and durable materials. The accessories available apply to either style as well, for example if the child is tube fed having an attached pole will be beneficial. Also consider an attached holder for oxygen tank should the child be on oxygen. A manual chair should be one that is lightweight for ease in pushing or for the child to manoeuvre.

The cushion for the seat needs to be one that is comfortable enough for sitting during a long time. A cushion that is too soft will eventually break down and become extremely uncomfortable and one that is to thin will not provide the needed leg support. According to retailers, the cushion should be no more or no less than the width of three fingers.

The design of the foot rest is also crucial when choosing a wheelchair. They should be adjustable in order to avoid strain on the knees and legs. For the best fit their legs should not pull down or draw up with their thighs sitting flat on the cushion.

When they do not have any control with their head, a head strap will also need to be installed on the chair. The strap has to be adjustable and fit snug without being overly tight or loose. The design of a paediatric wheelchair should be comfortable, colourful and designed to last for several years. Also look for ones with extra storage compartments for carrying necessities.
