What is Adult ADHD Anyway?

Adult ADHD is a more common phenomenon than most of us think as it remains a largely unrecognised condition. How often have we observed an individual who just doesn't seem to be with it? Whom we have to ask five times to do the same thing? Who drives us nuts with his inability to stay on task? Well, that individual may have ADHD! ' But he's an adult ! He's thirty years old! When is he going to grow up?' we ask in exasperation. Maybe never!

Most of us think of ADHD as something that only affects children, who outgrow the problem as they mature. That however has now been shown to be untrue. Roughly 60% of children with ADHD still demonstrate the symptoms into adulthood and the other 40% have probably simply developed coping mechanisms to deal with the effects of the disorder.

Adult ADHD is a neurological brain disorder that is symptomised by distractibility, impulsivity, hyperactivity and forgetfulness. These characteristics occur more frequently and severely than in non-ADHD individuals at the same level of mental development.

Sufferers of Adult ADHD can complete one task at a time but if faced with extraneous stimuli will be very easily distracted. If someone asks a question, especially one unrelated to their current task, they can be sent of on that tangent and may forget about their primary task for a while. This leads to an inability to met deadlines unless strategies are in place to counter the distractions. Combined with forgetfulness it may make it difficult for the sufferer to keep jobs for any length of time.

Impulsive behaviour is often demonstrated by Adult ADHDers in things such as speeding on an open road or pulling a wheely on a public street. This behaviour can be controlled in time but hard consequences may have to be endured in the meantime. This impulsivity may also lead to poor decision making in difficult situations again leading to hard consequences.

Adult ADHD sufferers do not display hyperactivity in the same way as children do. Adult expression of this aspect of ADHD may take the form of participation in physically risky behaviour. They may participate in fighting sports, such as kickboxing or mixed martial arts. They may enjoy dirt biking and dirt bike racing as well as other forms physically challenging behaviour. They may not enjoy team sports, however, as their organisational disability may make team play unsuitable .

Adult ADHD contributes to social and professional problems and it is therefore important to acknowledge its existence and find ways to detect and treat the malady. There is a lot of research currently being done that may lead to early recognition and treatment of Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
