I am new to this site and have noticed that everyone seems to be aware that the Government (DWP) will give you 'money for taxis' to get to work i.e. you can claim Access to Work (AtW) but no-one seems to realise that once you get a car (through Motability for example) you can still claim AtW but instead of claiming your taxi fares you claim mileage.
The system works as follows:
You and a DWP/AtW Officer calculate the number of miles from your carer's house to your house: from your house to your work: from your work to your Carer's house and the return journey that evening.
If you use 40 mile per day then that's 200 miles per week. The mileage is then halved and you are paid 25p per mile. So in the case just quoted you would receive 200 miles divided by 2 = 100 x 25p = £25.00 per week.
