ADHD Alternative Therapy
It is every parent's worse nightmare to here the words ADHD as a diagnosis. The images of your child being labelled in school not to mention the drugs which are traditionally available. It is not a pretty picture. Sure, you are glad to know what is wrong but now what to do about it is the issue. Here we will look at some drugs that are traditionally used for ADHD therapy and some ADHD alternative therapies.
When you begin treating ADHD, you will find that most paediatricians are going to recommend stimulant drugs. This may seem counterintuitive but the hyperactive child's brain responds to these chemicals by calming and focusing. However, the trend toward prescribing these drugs has grown exponentially over the past decade and a half. In fact, the growth in ADHD therapy drugs has risen 500%! Leading many to ponder the question of if there is another way.
There are several ADHD alternative therapies that are herbal in nature. Some of the ingredients mimic drugs like Ritalin that are used in treating ADHD. Herbs like Ginkgo Biloba are shown to increase blood flow to the brain and increases neurotransmitters. This allows the brain to focus and the best part is the effects can become permanent relieving you of the need to continue taking the herb.
Siberian Ginseng is another herb that has shown great promise in treating ADHD. This herbal alternative therapy works by stimulating the brain and increasing concentration and endurance. All the same, types of things those controlled substances like Ritalin and Adderall do in treating ADHD.
Many children that suffer from adhd and similar ailments are often times anxious. The anxiety makes their symptoms even worse. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe strong drugs like Paxil or Prozac as mood stabilizers. I doubt if I have to tell you about the bad press these particular products have gotten. When my son suffered with ADHD and mood issues, I was shocked to find there were no long-term studies on Prozac in children! This was the point when I began to think there should be another way.
An herbal remedy that is particularly helpful for anxiety is Gotu Kola. Recent studies also indicate that it is good for increased blood flow to the brain and overall circulation. Not a bad deal if you ask me, it addresses anxiety and has other health benefits too.
The bottom line is this if you are one of the 500,000 or more who will deal with ADHD treatment do yourself and your child a favour and look into one of these ADHD alternative therapies. Alternatively, even look and find new ones, whatever you do, do not settle for controlled substances like Ritalin for ADHD therapy, unless you just have no other choice. In addition, never be afraid to ask for a second opinion research is showing that allergies and traumatic brain injury both can closely resemble ADHD.
