Discovering Reiki
With all the stresses of today's busy world, more and more people are looking for new techniques to help them reduce their stress. As an alternative to medication and other treatments that give the promise of relaxation, there is a renewed interest in Reiki.
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a technique used to reduce stress, help you to relax, and provide healing not only to your body but to your spirit. The name Reiki is taken from two Japanese characters that describe energy itself: 'rei', meaning 'unseen' or 'spiritual', and 'ki', meaning 'energy' or 'life force'.
In English, its meaning is usually given as 'life force energy'. When your life force energy is low, you are more likely to get sick or feel weak. If your life force is high, you feel healthy, stress-free and happy. Practitioners of Reiki believe that such people have a more positive outlook on life and a greater capability to face the challenges of everyday living.
Administered by 'laying on hands', this technique is believed to promote the channelling of healing energy from one person to another, based on the idea that there is an unseen life force energy that flows through each person.
Reiki is considered to be a wonderful means of relaxation because it utilizes a person's innate warmth and energy. This energy is then converted to a 'purer' form of energy - free from the busy schedules and toxicities of modern living. People who have tried Reiki say that the technique not only treats the physical body but also alleviates emotional burdens, lessens the clutter of the mind, and nourishes the spirit.
Reiki is said to work well when combined with other medical or therapeutic techniques to help relieve side effects and promote recovery.
Developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Tendai Buddhist, Reiki has been a popular form of stress relief for people all over the world. The practice has evolved into various forms and has been practiced by numerous Reiki masters across the globe.
Reiki, although seen as a very powerful healing technique, is amazingly simple to learn. Reiki and the ability to use it effectively cannot be taught in the usual sense. The skill is passed on by a Reiki master to the student during a gathering known as 'attunement'. After the skill has been passed on, the student can tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy that can then be used to improve one's health and enhance the quality of one's life.
Although the practice of Reiki may be spiritual in nature, it is not considered to be a religion. There is no set of beliefs that one needs to learn, and the practice of Reiki does not depend on any form of dogma. But it is said that Reiki helps people become more in touch with their spiritual selves.
The practice of Reiki also aims to develop and promote living in harmony with others. Aside from practicing Reiki and its principles, Mikao Usui also recommended the practice of simple ethical ideals that can lead to peace and harmony among people.
